Guidance on Flight Planning for transponder and ADS-B

Air Traffic Control makes use of information in the flight plan for predicting the surveillance capability of an aircraft before it enters radar or ADS-B coverage. It’s important that this information is correct, as it may affect the provision of surveillance services or the safety of the operation.The capability of your aircraft transponder, and ADS-B capability, will typically be available in the transponder manual or in the flight manual for the aircraft. Configurations for filing in the flight plan Field 10b are listed below, however full flight planning requirements are described in AIP ENR 1.10.‘EB1’ will be the appropriate entry for the majority of ADS-B equipped General Aviation aircraft.

* Enhanced surveillance capability is the ability of the aircraft to down-link aircraft derived data (such as selected flight level) via a Mode S transponder. This capability is typically associated with higher end aircraft.

** ADS-B UAT and VDL Mode 4 are not authorised for use in Australia.
