Regulations for
Aircraft emissions
All civil aircraft operating in Australia are required to comply with the Air Navigation (Aircraft Engine Emissions) Regulations 1995 regardless of size, purpose or ownership.
Responsibility for regulatory compliance rests with the aircraft operator/owner to ensure their aircraft meets the Regulations.
- For all aircraft with a turbine engine – an aircraft with a turbine engine must meet the requirements specified in International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Annex 16, Volume II, Part II relating to fuel venting.
- For aircraft with a turbo-jet or turbofan engine – an aircraft with a turbo-jet or turbofan engine must meet the requirements specified in ICAO Annex 16, Volume II, Part III relating to smoke emissions and gaseous emissions.
Compliance to the appropriate standards is generally outlined in the appropriate Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS) for the aircraft or engine model, or in the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) or Pilot Operating Handbook (POH). The Aircraft Engine Emission support tool below is available to assist you to confirm that your aircraft holds existing engine emissions certification.
Special note
Eligibility to operate the aircraft in compliance with the Air Navigation (Aircraft Engine Emissions) Regulations 1995 does not override any conditions on operation of the aircraft which have been specified under any other Acts, Regulations, Orders or Instructions administered by Airservices Australia, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority or other relevant Federal or State authorities.
Air Navigation (Aircraft Engine Emissions) Regulations 1995 support tool
The following tool has been developed to assist aircraft owners and operators to identify existing evidence of international engine emission certification, to demonstrate compliance with the Air Navigation (Aircraft Engine Emissions) Regulations 1995.
Before you begin:
The Aircraft Engine Emissions support tool has been developed to assist users in determining their compliance with the Regulations. Please be aware that the Aircraft Engine Emissions support tool does not retain any information. Prior to using this tool, you should ensure you have access to:
- the full details of your aircraft configuration, most importantly the engine installed,
- the up-to-date Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) or Pilot Operating Handbook (POH),
- a copy of your aircraft’s Type Certificate Data Sheet (TCDS), if easily available.
