Airservices weather camera portal now live

Airservices Australia has today announced it has launched a new portal that features camera views of weather conditions at locations around Australia.

The live portal which can be found on the Airservices website allows pilots to view actual weather conditions at a variety of locations across the country.

Airservices has been working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology and airports to identify sites with existing power, communication infrastructure and camera equipment to provide the new service.

Airservices Chief Executive Officer Jason Harfield said Airservices has launched the new portal with an initial six locations with more to come.

“With valuable assistance from the Bureau of Meteorology the new portal features cameras at Archerfield, Kilmore Gap, Kingscoat, Launceston, Norfolk Island and Parafield and now we will work to implement cameras at other sites based on results of an online survey.”

The Airservices survey attracted an astounding 540 responses over a four week period and the results will be analysed to ensure the weather camera network is installed in locations that will deliver the greatest safety benefit. In all 826 suggestions were submitted nominating 230 different locations.

Whilst the survey results are yet to be finalised, both Kilmore Gap and Archerfield finished strongly in the preliminary results, and both are available in this first tranche.

“I want to thank all those who participated in the online survey to identify those locations that the aviation community feels would most benefit from up-to-date visual weather assessments,” said Mr. Harfield.

“This knowledge will help us with the next phase of the project in the coming months when we will focus on delivering camera infrastructure to the next round of sites.”
